I use whatever lighting is best for the intended result. Hot lights, strobes, ugly green fluorescents, or even those hideous orange metal halide lamps (ugh). Most of the time it’s strobes straight up or mixed with available light.

Approved layouts, frame grabs, web pics or, my favorite, the napkin sketch are the usual point of genesis. Sometimes it’s an index finger pointed in some direction, “How ’bout that?”. Twenty-five years ago, it was the fanatically detailed marker comp that carried the title as “Approved”. Wish I had a few of those in my museum, but it’s all good.
